The First Baptist Church of Riverside was founded in 1874. Its building was located in downtown Riverside until 1965, when the new facility was built on Alessandro Boulevard. The First Baptist Preschool was begun in 1967, and in 1973 the church built Mount Rubidoux Manor, providing apartments for low-income seniors.
What We're Doing Now
Today, our mission is to help people in our congregation grow in spiritual maturity through our C4 strategy: Connect to God, Care for One Another, Carry out the Mission, and Communicate the Faith.
We Connect to God through our times of corporate worship on Sunday mornings, spiritual retreats, and other opportunities offered throughout the year.
We Care for One Another through our small group ministries. We offer several different groups and classes through out the week where people can come together to study God's word and to build a strong caring and supportive relationship with the other members of the group.
We Carry Out the Mission, through several ministry opportunities. The church has an ongoing ministry to the homeless of Riverside called GUMBO. On Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings, volunteers from the church prepare and deliver meals to the homeless on the streets and offer words of encouragement and practical help. Several church members provide tutoring in the two public elementary schools that serve the poorest neighborhoods of Riverside. First Baptist is also assisting a nearby Spanish-speaking congregation to expand its facilities.
We Communicate the Faith by our words and actions everyday, especially with our friends, family, and others that we are in contact with daily.
First Baptist Riverside belongs to a movement of churches called Transformation Ministries. We join with about 170 other churches in the Southwest for mutual support, learning, and greater mission effectiveness.
